5th Grade Reading & Writing
Writing
The integrated reading and writing (IRW) SOL is a state required assessment for all students in grades 5, 8 and 11 End of Course. The assessment presents students with a nonfiction passage (or possibly a pair of passages at grade 8 and EOC) based on science or history content. The passage is accompanied by six multiple-choice/ technology enhanced items and one writing prompt that is based on the passage. The nonfiction passage provides context for students to use when responding to the prompt, or it may serve as a springboard for students who choose to incorporate personal experiences in their responses. This SOL is an additional separate component of the reading SOL (Standards of Learning). Upper Elementary Scoring Rubrics
